AID FUNDS UPDATE
Arnold
Bray, the district's Sacramento-based
consultant, provided an update of the state budget situation. While the
legislature is trying to work with the Governor to solve the $42 billion
deficit, there is a proposal under consideration that threatens basic
aid for community colleges. Hopefully it will go away, but he emphasized
that we need to be prepared and aware of the threat. |

- President
Donald P. Wagner expressed his condolences to the
family of Dr. Howard Adams and announced that the
meeting would be adjourned in his memory. He attended the Chancellor's
Opening Session to welcome back faculty and staff to a new year, and
thanked everyone for a great program. He attended the first Presidents'
Cup basketball match between SC and IVC which was well attended. He's
looking forward to the rematch.
- Vice
President John S. Williams complimented the program
of the Chancellor's Opening Session and said that he enjoyed learning
about the differences and characteristics of Gen X, Y and baby boomers.
- Clerk
of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes gave a report on the
Orange County Legislative Task Force (OCLTF). A letter is being sent
to the Orange County delegation in Sacramento asking them to pass the
budget immediately so that we can have the certainty of a budget, in
these uncertain times. On the whole, OC community colleges are facing
severe budget cuts and the halting of construction projects, amidst
skyrocketing enrollments. On February 27 a student rally with the theme
“We are the Key to Recovery” will be held at Pasadena City College.
Another rally of K-12, community colleges, UCI and CSU Fullerton is
being planned for this spring at a stadium in Orange County. He thanked
everyone who planned and attended the Chancellor's Opening Session which
featured an outstanding keynote speaker and musical entertainment.

William O. Jay shared his sadness at the passing of
Dr. Adams who dedicated his career to Saddleback College
and held the highest academic standards. He was disappointed that the
faculty master contract was withdrawn but looks forward to it coming
back before the board.

David B. Lang acknowledged the inauguration of President
Barack Obama and wished him success. He said that our district
has important decisions ahead in regards to the faculty contract. He
emphasized that the board supports and respects faculty, yet it also
represents the citizens. Any additional monies beyond COLA are a concern
to many on the board. We want to continue to leave a positive financial
legacy.

Marcia Milchiker attended many in-service sessions
including those facilitated by: Kurt Meyer, Jodi Titus, Jeanne
Egasse, Gwen Plano, Elizabeth Cipres, Bob Bramucci and Jim Gaston. She
enjoyed the presentations by Dr. Pamela Cox-Otto about
the various generations attending our colleges and is looking forward
to attending the Community College League of California Legislative
Conference in Sacramento this month. She was recently appointed to serve
on a state committee of trustees.

Nancy M. Padberg was saddened by passing of Howard
Adams whom she has known for 25 years. He will be missed.
She attended the Presidents' Cup basketball game, which SC won, and
called attention to the re-match scheduled for February 11 when the
actual cup will be awarded.
- Chancellor
Raghu P. Mathur gave Student Trustee Hannah
Lee's report. She wanted to remind everyone of the upcoming
Presidents' Cup basketball game on February 11 at IVC starting at 5:30pm.
Enrollment numbers for the spring semester are up significantly from
this time last year. SC headcount is up 6.3%, FTES (full time equivalent
students) is up 8.8%. IVC headcount is up 11.7% and FTES is up 15.4%.
ATEP has its highest headcount yet with almost 1,000 students! District
wide headcount is up 7.8% over last year and FTES is up 11%. He expressed
appreciation for the hard work of all faculty and staff. Economic conditions
are difficult and we need to be prudent to maintain the fiscal health
of our district now and in the future.

President Tod Burnett 's written report included mention
of: in-service week activities; Gaucho men's basketball team won all
10 of its December games; Emeritus Institute's Spring Distinguished
Guest Lecture Series in which Dr. Burnett was the opening speaker; enrollment
is up with notable growth in online classes in the Social & Behavioral
Sciences Division as well as a 17% growth in Math, Science & Engineering
Division classes; interior design students are advising the AGB building
renovation; and the OC Board of Realtors pledged $25,000
toward the Veterans Memorial campaign.

President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included
mention of: more than 250 participated in the Adopt-A-Family celebration
to help needy students and their families; composition student Joshua
Mills won first prize in the 2008 Music Assn. of CA Community
College Competition Contest; 22 nd Annual Astounding Inventions is scheduled
for Saturday, January 31; internationally-renowned author Ray
Bradbury will address the college community on January 28
at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center; and Slawomir Dobrzanski
is the featured guest artist in a recital scheduled for January
31 st at 8pm.

Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention
of: review of structures for demolition; development of windscreen fencing,
banners and portal entry signage; update on the Center for Applied Competitive
Technologies (CACT) program; meeting with Concordia University to discuss
partnering on a nursing simulation lab; progress on the Academic Foundations
Institute for summer semester 2009; and a marketing and outreach update.
