REPORTS AND COMMENTS

• President Donald P. Wagner thanked the IVC staff who planned the Veteran's Day event and Saddleback College Foundation Director Michelle Anstadt and the Board of Governors for a successful 5th Annual Western Gala. He congratulated Trustees Jay and Williams on their re-elections by overwhelming majority of voters. He also congratulated Trustee Lang who recently assumed the presidency of the Orange County Chapter of the American Jewish Committee.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg commended the Saddleback College Foundation on their recent gala event. She was pleased to participate in the Veteran's Day event at IVC. She expressed appreciation for the faculty and encouraged them to continue to attend and participate in Board meetings. She is looking forward to the conclusion of faculty negotiations.

• Trustee Thomas Fuentes thanked the Saddleback College Foundation for their gala event and IVC for their Veteran's Day tribute, noting the choir's performance. He extended his thanks to the Honorable Rod Paige, outgoing Secretary of Education in President Bush's administration. He traveled recently to Washington, D.C. and commented that this administration is a supporter of community colleges.

• Trustee William O. Jay thanked everyone who worked for his re-election.

• Trustee David Lang complimented Professor Lewis Long for the homemade computers that he has made available to families. He recognized the faculty and staff for their dedication and professionalism, and mentioned that the Board is committed to achieving a new contract very soon.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker attended a banquet during which the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute was honored with the SAGE (Senior Achievement and General Excellence) award for its contribution to enhancing the quality of life for seniors. The SAGE award is presented by the Seniors Housing Council of the Building Industry Association of Southern California. She attended a Ramadan banquet at Saddleback College which was also attended by 82 students, 75 of whom were non Muslims. She announced the plant sale at Saddleback College on Thursday and Friday, November 18 and 19.

• Trustee John Williams thanked all who helped with his campaign and said he is looking forward to serving four more years. He mentioned that significant progress is being made for a new faculty contract.

• Student Trustee Brittany Poulton is developing a website which will provide information on issues being presented at board meetings that affect students. She wants to provide an opportunity for students to feel connected with decision makers.

• Chancellor Mathur thanked the many faculty members who spoke at the meeting and for their hard work and dedication to students. He has made recommendations regarding the settlement of the faculty contract to the Board and will be working with the negotiating teams to bring resolution to this matter.  A workshop on ATEP is being planned to present ideas from faculty and staff on programs and courses, and seek the Board's determination of priorities.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore thanked Trustees Wagner, Fuentes, and Padberg and Chancellor Mathur for attending the Veteran's Day event. Dr. Roquemore's written report included mention of: women's golf team won the Orange Empire Conference title for the first time (shared with Saddleback College); Star Trek actor Walter Koenig created four public service announcements to promote the Emeritus Institute and IVC; campus safety and security officers participated in Irvine Community Drug Prevention program's Red Ribbon Week by delivering pizzas to local residents along with Irvine Police and Orange County Fire Authority; Phi Theta Kappa honor society members organized an early voting effort that was commended by the Registrar of Voters; a Buddhist Priest lectured on monastic lifestyle and Japanese art.

• Saddleback College President Richard McCullough thanked the Board for attending the Western Gala and President Wagner for attending the student Republication and Democrat debate. Dr. McCullough's written report included mention of: appointment of Dr. Maria Besnard to the post of Director of Student Affairs; 73 percent of students used online registration for fall semester; 51 attended the first transfer workshop offered for student athletes; cosmetology program has its highest student retention in four years; women's golf team won its fifth consecutive Orange Empire Conference title (this year shared with IVC); three students qualified for a national championship tennis tournament in Florida; $500,000 grant was received for training in rapid prototyping and modeling; and certification for International Computing Driving License will be offered in the spring.

• ATEP Provost Robert J. Kopecky reported that the state architect has approved the plans for ATEP, the U.S. Navy will be demolishing buildings in December at their cost, and he and the Chancellor will be meeting with the City of Tustin to discuss how to expedite the City's courtesy review process.

• Addressing the Board were a number of faculty and students and: Professor Lewis Long, Faculty Association, Beep Colclough, CSEA; Susan Pak, Associated Students of IVC, Rachel Hipolite, Associate Student Government of Saddleback College. Professor Long received a standing ovation after an IVC student spoke movingly about his gift to her family of a computer that he built.
