The board of trustees honored
Dr. Georgina Guy, coordinator of Saddleback College's EOPS/CARE department, Director of CalWORKS, and a counselor, for her Outstanding Service Award from the California Community Colleges Extended Opportunity Program and Services Association (CCCEOPSA). She also services as a representative for Region VIII.

• a redistricting plan that will realign trustee area boundaries to better equalize populations and maintain compliance with state and federal voting rights acts.

• an agreement with Perceptive Software for on-site training for the Document Management Solution in the amount of $20,000.00.

• decreasing the contract amount by $4,440.00 to Credentials, Inc. due to savings by implementing electronic transcript services.

• increasing the contract amount by $3,773.00 to Edge Development for Irvine Valley College's
  Life Sciences building project.  

REPORTSRTS

• Trustee Meldau thanked the chancellor, faculty and students who came out to show their support at the town meeting. He commented that the SC veterans day ceremony was quite touching, and remarked on the importance of remembering our veterans. He and several other board members met with the ACCJC visiting team. He is looking forward to attending the nursing pinning on Dec. 6. Trustee Milchiker thanked Trustee Fuentes for attending the meeting, knowing how difficult it is given his illness; she thanked him for the Ronald Reagan bust and pointed out the new plaque recognizing his generous gift to our district. She reiterated that she is fighting for emeritus institute funding as she believes in its important contribution to our community. Trustee Prendergast attended and spoke at IVC's veterans ceremony. He is impressed with the veterans center which was planned and is operated by veterans and enjoyed a tour of their "war room" where veterans mentor each other. He also attended the college-wide forums and the student success task force town hall meeting and enjoyed witnessing democracy in action. He highlighted the recent praise from Tustin Unified regarding our quality faculty. Trustee Padberg attended the student success town hall meeting and a veteran's ceremony with local legislators in San Clemente. She is really enjoying attendance at the colleges' sporting events. Trustee Fuentes commented on what a joy it was to be at the board meeting, given the fact that he is in his 15th week of hospice care which typically keeps him at home. "It is a rare opportunity that I get out to see you," he said, but assured the audience that he continues to participate in all the agendas so he can say abreast of what's happening. He reflected on the CA budget crisis, and warned that we are all under the gun. He urged the board to continue with their conservative fiscal policies to keep us out of trouble. Trustee Lang wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving with safe travels.  Student Trustee Larson said he is looking forward to the nursing program pinning ceremony to show his support for many friends and fellow students.

• Chancellor Gary Poertner brought attention to the presentations of the night focused on student success. These presentations have been planned for some time now and will focus on district-wide progress in meeting the completion agenda identified in the Vision 2020 Report on Student Success. Next month, the presentation to the board will concern information regarding the colleges' program planning for ATEP for board approval consideration in January.

• Saddleback College - President Tod Burnett's report included mention of: SC hosted a town hall meeting for the statewide student success taskforce to gain input; SC and IVC are partnering on new web portal to help students find interships and employer to find interns; career technical education spotlighted at family night to highlight what to do with an education; health sciences partnered with Kaiser-Irvine on a research award to examine the relationshp between post-operative pain and music; annual science lecture series continues through April 6; upcoming piano recital Nov. 20; Phi Theta Kappa fall induction Dec. 9; Women's and Gender Studies hosted a domestic violence awareness talk; anthropology and environmental studies field trips are teaching students about nuclear fusion and environmental restoration to name just a few; VETS place flags in the quad and held a student-run ceremony for Veterans Day; transfer center hosted classes, presentations and events including 10 universities.

• Irvine Valley College - President Glenn Roquemore's report included mention of: IVC to sponsor the Exchange Club of Irvine, Irvine Chamber of Commerce, and City of Irvine's 30th Annual Thanksgiving Community Prayer Breakfast; IVC Psychology Professor Kari Tucker recognized for winning the Wayne Weiten Teaching Excellence Award; Job and Career Tech Fair with over 20 Employers recruiting; IVC and Engineers4KidsUSA hosted FIRSTLEGO League; ASIVC hosted their annual Halloween Spooktacular Event; Jane Austen celebration goes through Dec. 19; seven veterans from different eras and wars participated in a moving Veterans Day program to honor their own; IVC Art Gallery to showcase faculty through Jan. 20; IVC Dance department presents Dance Perspectives on Nov. 18; IVC Theatre Department presented seven performances of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes"; President Roquemore led an accreditation team visit at Modesto Junior College October 24-27.

• Business Services - Vice Chancellor Debra Fitzsimons' report included mention of: catastrophic leave policy expanded to allow all employee groups to donate sick leave to other employees; basic aid administrative regulation will be brought to the board in January given its high profile and relation to accrediation issues; state budget status remains dire with projections for a $5-8 billion shortfall and it is uncertain how this will be addressed. The Governor will release his budget proposal by Jan. 10 and more information should be forthcoming at the annual state legislative conference in late January.

• ATEP - Associate Vice Chancellor Randy Peebles report included mention of: final demolition activities are under way for the last two buildings - the chapel and the helicopter hangar - which should commence in early 2012. The land exchange agreement with the county is nearing completion and progress is continuing in land exchange discussions with the city of Tustin. Both agreements will enhance the functionality of the ATEP property. Development continues in the Tustin Legacy project, including the extension of Tustin Ranch Road which will provide increased access to Tustin Legacy. Commercial and retail developers are submitting proposals to the city for several Tustin Legacy site developments which will have a positive economic impact for the ATEP property.

The board meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week at www.socccd.edu. Television broadcasts are scheduled for 7 pm on Friday, Nov. 19 and Saturday, Nov. 20, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 7 pm.
