PRESENTATIONS
SOCCCD:
Student Success Planning
Saddleback
College Presenters: Penny Skaff, Kevin O'Connor, Don Busche, Tammy Rice
Irvine
Valley College presenter: Craig Justice, Gwen Plano, Lisa Davis-Allen
Saddleback
College and Irvine Valley College counselors, faculty and administrators
gave an overview of their student success models. They stressed the
importance of starting early in the high school process, encouraging
students to get four years of English and math before coming to college.
Once here, they are assessed and encouraged to make an academic plan,
get involved in campus activities and continually meet with counselors
to keep them focused on completion. Our colleges have many resources
available to help students along the way – math, writing and language
skills centers, tutoring and specialty programs that focus on veterans,
ESL and honors students.
With
a nationwide reform movement that has called for one million more completions
in California by 2020, the colleges are honing in on expanded resources
to assist students before they get here and continue involvement every
step of the way until they complete a certificate, earn a degree or
obtain workforce skills for employment. Future planning steps include
establishing a college-wide definition of student success, including
student success goals in college strategic plans, establishing a student
success matrix, and supporting innovative student success initiatives
like MAP and Sherpa.

College and Irvine Valley College Accountability Reporting
Irvine
Valley College presenter: Chris Tarman
Saddleback
College Presenter: Nicole Ortega
Accountability
reporting is required by the state and is designed to measure how
effective we are at student success. Performance indicators include
data for transfer, persistence, course completion and improvement
rates in basic skills, ESL and other areas. The reports measure students
who earned certificates of at least 18 hours, are transfer prepared,
transfer ready or have earned a degree. Data is compared to other
institutions, both in peer groups (about 20-27 colleges) and statewide.
IVC scored above average in every area among peers and above average
statewide in six of seven categories. Saddleback scored above average
in five of seven areas among peers and above average in all seven
categories statewide consistently over the past three years. Saddleback
highlighted a significant improvement in persistence and ESL areas.

recognizing his generous gift to our district. She reiterated that she
is fighting for emeritus institute funding as she believes in its important
contribution to our community. Trustee Prendergast

task force town hall meeting and enjoyed witnessing democracy in action.
He highlighted the recent praise from Tustin Unified regarding our quality
faculty. Trustee Padberg attended the student success
town hall meeting and a veteran's ceremony with local legislators in
San Clemente. She is really enjoying attendance at the colleges' sporting
events. Trustee Fuentes commented on what a joy it
was to be at the board meeting, given the fact that he is in his 15th
week of hospice care which typically keeps him at home. "It is
a rare opportunity that I get out to see you," he said, but assured
the audience that he continues to participate in all the agendas so
he can say abreast of what's happening. He reflected on the CA budget
crisis, and warned that we are all under the gun. He urged the board
to continue with their conservative fiscal policies to keep us out of
trouble. Trustee Lang wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving
with safe travels. Student Trustee Larson said
he is looking forward to the nursing program pinning ceremony to show
his support for many friends and fellow students.
