CONGRATULATIONS!

IVC President Glenn Roquemore and SC President Tod Burnett introduced the full-time faculty approved for tenure who were in attendance at the meeting. In all, twenty-three faculty members from Saddleback College and nine from Irvine Valley College received tenure, effective 2009-10.

IVC Soccer Coach Martin McGrogan received a resolution to recognize his 250th career victory, and 19 years as a dedicated coach at IVC.

My Academic Plan (MAP) Team received a resolution commending them for earning state and national recognition for development of the MAP online tool to enhance student success.

• President Donald P. Wagner requested that the meeting be adjourned in memory of Hally Savio. He thanked everyone involved in making IVC Astounding Inventions such a success and fun. He also thanked SC and IVC for a successful and fun Presidents' Cup basketball series.

• Vice President John S. Williams attended the wonderful farewell memorial service for Hally Savio. He attended the Community College Futures Assembly and enjoyed being a co-presenter on a panel about My Academic Plan with Chancellor Mathur and Jim Gaston. He also learned more about alert systems that colleges and universities are installing for campus safety.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes gave a report on the activities of the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force. Orange County Treasurer Chriss Street addressed the group this month, an advocacy web site has been approved for launch, and the annual breakfast for state legislators is scheduled for April.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker congratulated faculty who were to be granted tenure. She said that our colleges are excellent because of the excellence of our professors. She encouraged everyone to attend the SC production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and congratulated both colleges on the acceptance of their accreditation progress reports. She thanked Norma Kershaw for a $20,000 planned gift to SC.

• Trustee Nancy M. Padberg said it was a very exciting first year for the Presidents' Cup basketball series. She attended the very touching memorial service for Professor Howard Adams.

• Student Trustee Hannah H.E. Lee attended the IVC homecoming event and enjoyed getting to know the impressive student leaders of SC Associated Student Government.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur reported on the impact of budget cuts across the state and shared his concerns about the tough decisions that community colleges are facing because of $7.4 billion in cuts this year and $3.2 billion next year. One K-12 district in south Orange County is considering a school closure and LA Unified is facing $800 million in cuts. We are fortunate in our district to be planning to hire new faculty.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: the positive news that the Accrediting Commission accepted the 2008 Accreditation Progress Report; college-wide vision and mission workshop; winning the Presidents' Cup trophy for the most points scored in basketball series with IVC; Black History Month events; launch of new online service “Ask a Librarian”; selection of Instructor Nancy Bessette as California Community College Physical Educator of the Year; and selection of Dean Tony Lipold as California Community College Athletic Director of the Year.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: the positive news that the Accrediting Commission accepted the 2008 Accreditation Progress Report; winning the 11th in a series of international debates, this year with Chinese debate teams; 22nd annual Astounding Inventions event which awarded over $8,000 to young inventors from Irvine and Tustin Unified School Districts; second annual Homecoming celebration; first annual Jenny Richards Memorial Voice Scholarship Benefit Recital; and Jazz Ensemble Concert to celebrate Black History Month.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles's written report included mention of: enrollment passing the 1,000 student mark; development phase of a concept plan for board review which includes 300,000 square feet of education buildings; participation in the annual “Optricks Days” at the Discovery Science Center; 8th graders visiting campus to learn more about high tech careers during Job Shadowing Day; and marketing and outreach plans and activities.

• tenure for full-time faculty; and entering second and third year contracts for full-time faculty members.

• SC and IVC community education summer 2009 courses, presenters and compensation.

• acceptance of $400,000 grant to SC from the California Community College Chancellor's Office to fund a consortium of SC, IVC, five feeder unified school districts, two regional occupational programs and Vital Link to provide career development to 7th and 8th graders and many other related activities.

• changes in curriculum for the 2009-10 academic year at SC and IVC, except for the tabling of three online geography courses at SC.

• completing the purchase on the furniture bid at IVC Business Sciences Technology & Innovation Center for $116,000 from basic aid funds, due to suspension of state funding; and continuing the progress on SC's basic aid funded swing space renovation projects and SC Village expansion project.

• purchase of portable buildings to expand the SC Village in an amount not to exceed $1,400,000.

• SC Study Abroad program to Santander, Spain in the summer of 2009.

• nomination of Vice President John Williams for the Marian Bergeson Award of the Orange County School Boards Association.

Dr. Rajen Vurdien, SC Vice President for Instruction, and Dr. Craig Justice, IVC Vice President of Instruction, provided a briefing on basic skills initiatives at both colleges.  Click here to view their PowerPoint presentation. 

Professor Bob Cosgrove, SC Academic Senate President, and Professor Kathy Schmeidler, IVC Curriculum Chair, gave a status report on the development of curriculum at the colleges.
