Board Meeting Update
February 23, 2004
Following are the highlights of the Board meeting.
REPORTS
- President Don Wagner acknowledged board member candidate Gary Miller
who was attending the meeting, and pointed out that the other candidate,
William O. Jay, attended last month. Election for the open seat will
be held on March 30. On March 4 there is to be a candidate’s
forum (Saddleback College Student Services Center, Room 212, 7pm).
President Wagner encouraged all to attend or listen in on KSBR. In
reading a publication of the California Federation of Teachers, he
learned that many of the same issues our District is facing with the
faculty union are being echoed throughout the State. He stated that
our Board desires to work with the Faculty Association in developing
a state of the art faculty contract.
- Trustee Fuentes encouraged everyone to vote March 2.
- Trustee Marcia Milchiker attended the retirement luncheon for IVC
employee Mahshid Jajir. She spoke enthusiastically about a tour of
the IVC Honors program, meeting students, and learning about the active
chapters of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at both Colleges, which
help students to build leadership skills.
- Student Trustee Phil Erquiaga complimented the Saddleback Symphony
and Professor Carmen Dominguez for an outstanding performance last
weekend.
- Chancellor Raghu Mathur reported on a recent trip to Sacramento
to attend a legislative conference and meet with legislators. He mentioned
meeting with legislators at an event of the Orange County Legislative
Task Force, also attended by President Wagner, and Trustees Nancy
Padberg and Dave Lang. He recognized Tamara King from the District,
Marilyn Radenovic at IVC, and Linda Bashor at Saddleback College.
They coordinated efforts to raise awareness and money this month to
combat heart disease in women and men, as part of a campaign launched
by the American Heart Association. Chancellor Mathur invited the Faculty
Association leadership to work with him and the administration to
discuss and resolve contractual matters.
- Highlights of President Dixie Bullock’s written report to
the board included mention of: a Teddy Bear Clinic conducted by nursing
students, high school counselor day, online registration meetings,
financial aid workshops for students, bilingual outreach events, fine
arts performances, and Gaucho athletic achievements.
- Highlights of President Glenn Roquemore’s written report
included mention of: Astounding Inventions competition sponsored by
the IVC Foundation, the financial aid program, record enrollment in
the Emeritus Institute; overall positive enrollment growth at IVC,
and publishing an admissions and records orientation guide for international
students.
- Addressing the Board were: Mike Merrifield, Faculty Association;
Mary Williams, CSEA; Kevin Fitzpatrick, ASCOSC; and Divya Yagalla,
ASIVC. Students from both campuses are planning to participate in
the March in March in Sacramento.
