BOARD
MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
April
26, 2004
NEW
BOARD MEMBER
William
O. Jay was sworn in by President Donald P. Wagner as a member of the
South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees representing
Area 3.
REPORTS
& COMMENTS
- President Wagner, Vice President Nancy
Padberg, Clerk Thomas A. Fuentes, Trustee David Lang, Trustee Marcia
Milchicker, and Trustee John Williams each welcomed Trustee Jay.
- President
Wagner thanked Trustee Padberg and District and Saddleback
College
staff who hosted Congressman Gary Miller's visit to Saddleback
College
this month. The visit was initiated by Trustee Milchiker. President
Wagner recently met with auditors who gave positive reviews to District
staff for their professionalism, in particular Deputy Chancellor Gary
Poertner and District Budget Director Katie Slavin. The Board President
and Chancellor were at Tustin City
Hall last week with the mayor and city
manager to sign documents officially transferring over 68 acres of
land at the Tustin
base to the District. The new home to the Advanced Technology and
Education Park (ATEP) at the base will be critical to county economic
development efforts.
- Trustee Jay thanked all those who supported
him in the recent special election.
- Trustee Milchiker registered on line
for two classes and expressed how easy the system is to use.
- Trustee Padberg attended two prayer
breakfasts this month with many fellow community leaders. She mentioned
that Congressman Miller's visit was particularly rewarding because
of the time he spent talking to Professor Lee Haggerty's American
Government class.
- Student Trustee Phillip Erquiaga congratulated
outstanding classified staff and teachers of the year and commended
the efforts of everyone who makes a difference in getting students
through college.
- Chancellor
Mathur attended the induction of more than 100 students into the Phi
Theta Kappa Honor Society at Saddleback
College.
Annual scholarship programs are coming up on May 13. A special luncheon
in appreciation of the efforts of all district faculty, staff and
administrators/managers was scheduled on April 30 to feature students
from both colleges as well as recognition of teachers of the year,
outstanding classified staff of the year, and presentation of service
pins to classified leadership staff.
- Saddleback
College
President Dixie
Bullock mentioned in her written report: EOPS/CARE/CalWORKS holding
an annual recognition program for students who have completed certificate
requirements and achieved the Dean's List; and the Center
of Career
and Life Development was chosen as a model “Career Center Best Practice”
by the California Community College Statewide Career Development Advisory
Committee.
-
Irvine Valley College President Glenn Roquemore
mentioned in his written report: Administration of Justice Program
won three national awards; model United Nations team took the top
award at the UC Berkeley Model UN simulation; Fine Arts Professor
Robert MacNeil was chosen by tenor Placido Domingo to sing with the
Los Angeles Opera; and the Alpha Omega Mu Chapter of IVC Phi Theta
Kappa received two awards.

Dominguez, Saddleback College Academic Senate; Greg Bishopp, Irvine
Valley College Academic Senate; Mike Merrifield, Faculty Association;
Mary Williams, CSEA; Kevin Fitzpatrick, ASCOSC; and DivyaYagalla,
ASIVC.

to know specifics, please contact the Office of the President or Deputy
Chancellor. Item 9, Classified Leadership Classification Review, was
pulled and the issue will come before the Board at a future date.

- Beejay Janiga from the Emeritus Institute

of Oppose Unless Amended on Senate Bills 1817 and 1785, which could

difficult for our students to transfer to the California
State University
system.
- acceptance for review and study the
IVC and Saddleback College Accreditation Self-Study Reports in preparation
for scheduled accreditation reviews in October 2004. Both reports
will come before the Board again at the May meeting.
