SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Ninety year-young John Polikaitis received a resolution for his dedication over 29 years to generations of Saddleback College students. Following illustrious careers in the U.S. Army during World War II and in the Los Angeles Fire Department, John Polikaitis has served as a night custodian at Saddleback College since 1979. He received a standing ovation!

• President Donald P. Wagner discussed receiving correspondence about one of our founding trustees, Hans Vogel, a distinguished veteran of World War II. He is exactly the type of person that will be honored by the SC Veterans Memorial.

• Vice President John S. Williams was in Sacramento last week and mentioned that a Sacramento Bee article highlighted the issue of public safety. He attended a national forum on information technology during which there were many discussions about early notification systems and the challenges of students handling stress. He hopes that the district will move toward a multi-faceted approach to campus security and the mental health of students.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes saluted SC for the Veterans Memorial groundbreaking, which represents a project that the community will take pride in. He gave a report about the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force and strategies being discussed to help the public understand the value of investment of public education, even in these difficult budget times. Over 1,800 K-12 public school teachers in Orange County have received layoff notices.

• Trustee David B. Lang applauded President McCullough and the SC Foundation for demonstrating such leadership in building the Veterans Memorial.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker attended the SC Veterans Memorial groundbreaking and discussed the speakers who shared their experiences from World War II and the Korean, Vietnam, and Iraq Wars. Her father served in World War II. She encouraged people to invest in a brick or bench to support the Memorial.

• Trustee Nancy M. Padberg, who was instrumental in the contributions of four cities to the SC Veterans Memorial, apologized for being unable to attend the groundbreaking.

• Student Trustee Matthew Reynard encouraged everyone to attend the IVC production of Fiorello! in April.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur attended the wonderful groundbreaking of the SC Veterans Memorial. He will be attending the American Association of Community Colleges conference next month and participating as a member of the organization's Commission on Research, Technology and Emerging Trends.

• SC President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: 200+ attendees participated in the Veterans Forum and Memorial Groundbreaking; updates from Student Services, Fine Arts, Physical Education & Athletics and Health Sciences and Human Services; sold out Re-Entry & Women's Center annual conference entitled “Jump-Start Your Health”; Emeritus Institute reached an all time high enrollment of over 11,000 students this semester; and Foundation employee matching gift campaign raised $28,698 from faculty and staff.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: open house held by the Japanese/Chinese Language faculty; Astounding Inventions reception for first place winners at the law firm of Greenberg, Traurig, LLP; guest speaker from Microsoft to the Young Engineer's Club; annual Senior Day was a big success; Professor Marjorie Luesebrink has been invited to attend a workshop in West Virginia funded by the National Science Foundation's CreativeIT program; and annual high school counselor's conference in the new Performing Arts Center.

• ATEP report from President Roquemore included mention of: career and transfer workshops for students; community education and computer courses will be offered this summer; online advertising to promote late start spring classes; article in Irvine World News highlighted IVC and ATEP math modeling students; and completion of summer schedule.

• SC and IVC summer 2008 community education courses, presenters and compensation.

• resolution adopting the guidelines of the Secretary of the Resources Agency for the purposes of implementing the procedures of the California Environmental Quality Act in the development of ATEP.

• following a public hearing, the ATEP short range plan for submittal to the City of Tustin which includes a Notice of Exemption stating that the plan will have not significant effect on the environment.

• amendment to the Exclusive Right to Negotiate Agreement between the District and Camelot Entertainment Group for the development of ATEP, extending the negotiation period to July 25, followed by a review period until August 29, 2008.

• a reimbursement agreement by which Camelot Development Tustin will reimburse the District for various consulting services to facilitate the development and processing of an ATEP conceptual plan and a long range plan for submission to the City of Tustin, estimated to be $786,100.

• an increase in the hourly rate for special legal services for ATEP provided by Jackson/DeMarco/Tidus/Peterson/Peckenpaugh.

• an agreement for special legal services with Liebert Cassidy Whitmore from January through December, 2008. The district has used the firm since April 2001 for community college legal matters.

• allocation of 2007-08 basic aid funds toward priority projects identified in the 2006 Facilities Master Plan, including construction of a loop road at SC and a Barranca entrance to the IVC campus.

• award of IVC Honorary Associate Degrees to Julie Davis and William Woollett, Jr.
