Special Recognition

Hannah H.E. Lee was presented a resolution in recognition of her service as the 2008-09 Student Trustee. 

Saddleback College 2008-09 Gaucho Men's Basketball Team was presented a resolution in recognition of their outstanding season and 2nd place finish at the state tournament.

Saddleback College student Brenda Brook received the first President's Award from Dr. Tod Burnett in recognition of her outstanding example to others by finding and turning in $3,000 from a fundraiser for the Veterans Memorial.

• President Donald P. Wagner gave a “hats off” to Chancellor Mathur, Tracy Daly and the IVC Team for the successful breakfast for legislators held at IVC for the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force (OCLTF). He is looking forward to the coming month of scholarship and graduation ceremonies and congratulated all those who were about to graduate. He thanked Student Trustee Hannah Lee for her service. He adjourned the meeting in memory of Rosalinde Wilcox and Geoff English who have given so many years of service to Saddleback College.

• Vice President John S. Williams attended the OCLTF breakfast and commented on the wonderful program in the impressive IVC Business Sciences Technology and Innovation Center. One of the program topics was the cost of textbooks. He enjoyed attending the production of As You Like It at the SC McKinney Theatre.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes gave a report on the successful OCLTF breakfast. Three legislators attended: Assembly Members Diane Harkey, Jim Silva and Jose Solorio. There were also representatives from the offices of Senators Mimi Walters, Tom Harman and Bob Huff as well as the offices of Assembly Members Chuck Devore and Van Tran. The highlight of the event was a panel discussion between the legislators and students from all four OC districts. The first question was asked by IVC student Christopher Hacela. He thanked Chancellor Mathur, 2008-09 OCLTF Chair, President Roquemore, the IVC Team and Tracy Daly.

• Trustee William O. Jay recognized David Curry and Brenda Brook, two individuals who represent the very best of our student body.

• Trustee David B. Lang thanked Student Trustee Lee for her dedicated and excellent service and extended greetings to incoming Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey. He attended the OCLTF breakfast. He enjoyed the excellent IVC production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and commended Professor Ron Ellison for giving students a chance to live their dreams. He is looking forward to seeing the campus and programs at Ohlone College which may inform the vision of ATEP. He mentioned the actions of SC student Brenda Brook help restore one's faith in people.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker attended the IVC Foundation Awards Dinner, which raised over $40,000 and honored Howard Kline and Fawn Tanriverdi. She attended wonderful productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at IVC and SC which showcased the excellence of our students. She encouraged everyone to purchase a brick or paver to support the SC Veterans Memorial and to attend a preview event on May 6.

• Student Trustee Hannah H.E. Lee attended the OCLTF breakfast. She introduced the new Student Trustee, Bi'Anca Bailey, and recognized many of the SC Associated Student Government officers in attendance. She expressed gratitude for her year as the Student Trustee.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur shared the most recent state budget outlook and predictions that the May propositions are likely to fail, except for 1F. Basic aid continues to be under threat as the state grapples with a potential $13 billion shortfall, including a $500 million cut to community colleges. At a recent conference, State Chancellor Jack Scott emphasized that now is the time to increase efficiency. There is legislation under consideration that would change the 50 percent law to 52 percent in order to include counselors and librarians in the percentage.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: lariatnews.com was awarded the highest ranking of “General Excellence” by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges and Lariat faculty advisor Paul McLeod was named Journalism Educator of the Year by the California Journalism Education Coalition; 6th Annual Mathematic Triathlon; contributions to the Veterans Memorial now top $140,000; 1,765 Early Bird applications have been received from high school seniors for Fall 2009; launch of 2009 College for Kids summer program; and a partnership between Community Education and the Emeritus Institute focused on workforce development.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: Alessandra Gangone and Thomas Feistel were named to the All-California First Academic Team; Japanese language and culture Professor Fumiko Ishii received a “Teachers Making a Difference” award at the Southern California Cherry Blossom Festival; Gee Dickson was named Outstanding Classified Employee of the Year; praise for the student services staff and Vice President of Student Services Gwen Plano from the Student Services Program Review & Technical Assistance Site Visit team; and Dr. Dottie Sherling was selected as a 2009-10 American Council on Education Fellow.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles's written report included mention of: visit to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena; continuing meetings with interested four-year college and university partners; hosting a meeting of the OC Workforce Investment Board; grant efforts; and spring enrollment is now at 1,091.

• Faculty Association Academic Employee Master Agreement for the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2010.

• acceptance of a $435,295 grant to develop the SC Medical Laboratory Technician program from the state Chancellor's Office through Governor's Workforce Investment Act Funds for Allied Health Programs.

• $75,000 for printing and mailing class schedules for 2009 Fall semester to Trend Offset Printing. The campuses are preparing to move toward all online class schedules by Spring 2010.

• IVC curriculum revisions for the 2009-10 academic year.

• $817,500 to Letner Roofing Co. for reroofing the SC Student Services building.

• amendment to the sabbatical project request by SC Professor Petrina Friede.

• A presentation on Early College Programs and K-12 Outreach was made for Saddleback College by President Tod Burnett and Leslie Humphrey, Coordinator, Outreach and Recruitment; for Irvine Valley College by President Glenn Roquemore; and for ATEP by Provost Randy Peebles. • A presentation was made on the effect of enrollment growth on basic aid funds by Deputy Chancellor Gary Poertner.

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, May 3 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
