Veterans Memorial Artists

Veterans Memorial Artists Professor Richard White and Fred Olson received a resolution from the Board of Trustees. Representatives from the Offices of Assemblymembers Van Tran and Jeff Miller presented recognition to Saddleback College for the Veterans Memorial.

• President Donald P. Wagner welcomed back Dixie Bullock and congratulated the colleges on their graduation ceremonies.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg congratulated Dixie Bullock as interim chancellor. She mentioned the incredibly touching dedication of the SC Veterans Memorial. She attended both college graduation ceremonies and expressed pride in the two SC state athletic championships, the SC nursing program and IVC's 25th anniversary. It is a wonderful, proud time of year.

• Clerk of the Board Marcia Milchiker enjoyed attending both graduations which are celebrations of all we do to help students. She attended the SC Human Services graduation which is very touching because of hardships the students overcome on their way to helping others. She attended retirement parties for Kathleen Constance, Mary Williams and Craig Grossman. She congratulated the SC nursing program on achieving a first place ranking in the nation.

• Trustee Thomas A. Fuentes congratulated the graduates of both colleges and Dixie Bullock.  He said it will be a pleasure to work with her again. He welcomed Student Trustee Shieh. The Veterans Memorial dedication was a magnificent day of prayer and recognition. He mentioned a well attended event for Chancellor Mathur which celebrated his career of leadership in higher education. He reminded everyone to vote on June 8.

• Trustee William O. Jay welcomed Dixie Bullock as interim chancellor. He thanked everyone who worked on the Veterans Memorial. He commented on the graduation ceremonies which were focused on students, and expressed appreciation to those who worked for months to make them “perfect.” He congratulated SC on the state tennis championship, IVC on their 25th anniversary, and Dr. Carmen Dominguez who will be serving again as SC Academic Senate President.

• Trustee David B. Lang congratulated Interim Chancellor Dixie Bullock and Student Trustee Shieh. He has visited the Veterans Memorial during the day and in the evening and mentioned that it is a magnificent and a fitting tribute to our veterans. He attended a retirement event for Mary Williams, the SC scholarship ceremony, the SC nursing program pinning ceremony and both college commencements. He related how meaningful it was to attend the event for Chancellor Mathur and see so many former trustees who were there to honor him and his accomplishments.

• Trustee John S. Williams served as the co-master of ceremonies at the IVC Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) recognition event. He thanked Bill Hewitt for the invitation to honor some of our most challenged students. It was a joy to attend both graduation ceremonies which were well-organized and flawless.

• Student Trustee Eve Shieh expressed that it is an honor to be on the board and that she is looking forward to working with everyone. She introduced her family and mentioned that she attended the IVC graduation.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur welcomed Student Trustee Shieh as the new student trustee and stated she will do an outstanding job representing students. He reflected upon meeting with student trustees over the years which has been a heartwarming reminder that all our work is about students.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: successful Veterans Memorial Dedication; nursing program ranked first out of 92 associate degree in nursing programs in the state and first out of 972 nursing programs across the nation; graduation ceremonies featuring Assemblywoman Diane Harkey as commencement speaker; President Burnett's receiving two awards at the Associated Student Government banquet; and updates from Student Services, Division of Fine Arts & Media Technology, Foundation and Community Education. 

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: adjunct professor David Monda's selection as a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar; demonstration for 75 high school students by Bruce Franklin, the production manager for the movie "Avatar"; Master Chorale Concert, 25th annual scholarship awards ceremony and Supportive Services Programs annual recognition ceremony; classified staff member Linda Renne's recognition from the Board of Governors in Sacramento; and the upcoming 25th anniversary celebration on June 4.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: ATEP Development Forum's review of prospectuses for new and expanded programs; promotion of summer classes; preparation of fall schedule; and a research project nearing completion with Orange County Business Council.

• accepting a $440,000 grant for an environmental design and compliance center at ATEP from the California Community College Chancellor's Office.

• increases in the 2010-11 child care fee schedule and annual registration fees.

• allocation of uncommitted basic aid funds for fiscal year 2009-10 for facility projects, legal defense and technology needs. 

• agreement for $349,000 to gkkworks to provide educational and facilities master planning services. 

• acceptance for review and study of the proposed district wide core values/guiding principles and strategic directions for 2010-13.

• a resolution notifying the Orange County Department of Education to consolidate the upcoming trustee election with other school district governing boards.

• acceptance for review and study the District's initial proposal to the SOCCCD Faculty Association and setting a public hearing on the proposal at the June board meeting.

• acceptance for review and study the District's initial proposal to the SOCCCD Police Officers Association and setting a public hearing on the proposal at the June board meeting.

Reports and Discussion

• The Board received and discussed an information report on the hiring of relatives from Dr. David Bugay, Vice Chancellor, Human Resources. 

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, May 28 and Saturday, May 29 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, May 30 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
