DID YOU KNOW?

• President Donald P. Wagner gave kudos to Chancellor Mathur who was invited by the Governor's Office to represent our district and Orange County at the "Road to Recovery" conference in Anaheim on July 22. He requested the meeting be adjourned in memory of Saddleback College former coach Flip Darr and student Pat Moore.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker announced that she is a lifetime member of the SC Alumni Association and encouraged others to join.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur commented on the state budget deal which cost California community colleges close to $1 billion, mostly in categorical programs such as EOPS and DSPS. If passed by the legislature and signed by the Governor, fees will go up from $20 to $26 per unit starting this fall, which will be challenging to implement because fall registration has already begun. These are challenging times for our three campuses and all community colleges around the state because we are experiencing record high enrollments amidst record unemployment. Orange County Treasurer Chriss Street met in the Chancellor's Office recently with the Chancellor and Deputy Chancellor Gary Poertner to discuss the impact on our basic aid revenues of the decline in value of the 280,000 properties assessed in Orange County.  Indications are that property values will be down 1.2% this year, 5% next year and then stay down for a number of years. Available information will be included in the district's final budget which will go to the Board in August.

• SC President Tod Burnett 's written report included mention of: management team identifying ways to cut costs and increase efficiencies; employing 49 youth this summer in partnership with the OC Workforce Investment Board; computer based radio log and dispatch system in the police department; Transfer Center activities; “Passport to the Arts” series for children and “Unconventional Summer Season” performances; nursing program accepted 462 applications for only 55 to 60 slots in Spring 2010; 34 students received a certificate of achievement in the medical assistant program; and social networking marketing is showing results.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: $10,000 gift from the Volunteers at Irvine Regional Hospital Medical Center for scholarships; Sheila Solaimani of Irvine will be the recipient of the IVC President's Scholarship; two basketball camp sessions for boys and girls were held by Head Basketball Coach Jerry Hernandez and Camp Director Andrew Alhadeff; Early Advantage Partnership with Chapman University which enhances student services for IVC and SC transfer students; computer-based assessment testing for English and math placement; and new online orientation available 24/7/365.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: continued planning for future and expanded programs including RapidTech, nursing simulation, music recording technology, communication arts and electrician's certification; working collaboratively with the colleges to submit grants; beginning in July, former SC Dean Rocky Cifone is the new Dean of Instruction & Student Services and Bruce Sobszak is the new director of the Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT @ ATEP); a promotional video developed to air on the colleges' TV stations; and summer enrollment is at 1,240.

• acceptance of a $3,500 award to IVC from the California Community Colleges Economic and Workforce Development Faculty Entrepreneurship Program.

• acceptance of a $225,000 award to SC from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office for the Teacher Preparation Pipeline grant.

• acceptance of a $373,320 award to SC from the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. SC was selected as one of 12 California community colleges to provide educational opportunities to Egyptian students in 2009-10.

• SC community educational fall courses, presenters and compensation.

• contract of $300,000 with Neudesic LLC for student information system “B” feature enhancements.

• a pool of nine firms from which to draw architectural services for a period up to five years.

• agreement with McCarthy Building Company for up to $978,030 for construction management of the SC James B. Utt Library renovation. The project is scheduled to go to bid January 2010.

• award of bid to TBC Contractors Corporation for $618,900 for the SC communication arts building interior renovations.

• 2009-10 SC child care fee schedule for a new toddler program serving children as young as 18 months of age.

The foundations fundraising activities and efforts were the subject of presentations and discussion featuring SC Foundation Director Michelle Anstadt and President of the Board of Governors Gary Capata and IVC Foundation Director Al Tello and Chairman of the Board of Governors, David A. Robinson.  The ATEP Foundation report was presented by Dr. Bramucci. Click here to view the presentation.
