Trustee Milchiker encouraged
everyone to see Oklahoma! at Saddleback College this (last)
weekend. She raved about the production and commented that it is performed
primarily by volunteers. Student Trustee Larson reported
that he has applied for the
California
Community College Trustee
position and
is one of eight finalists who will interview in mid-August. There were
no other trustee reports.
- Chancellor
Poertner highlighted a special donation from
Trustee Tom Fuentes, a
bust of Ronald
Reagan on a marble pedestal, gifted to the South Orange
County Community District for the Ronald Reagan Board of Trustees Room.
Chancellor Poertner shared the story behind the artwork
created by the late Orange County artist Woodrow Butterfield
and the special significance to Trustee Fuentes who
was instrumental in the naming of the board room in 2008 after the former
President. The board looks forward to sharing the artwork with the community
as soon as it can be properly secured in a display case.

Saddleback
College - President Tod Burnett's report included mention of: Saddleback
Civic Light Opera presents Oklahoma! through July 31; Mainstage
Kids, a collaboration between Performing Arts and Community Education
will perform Seussical Jr. The Musical on Aug. 6 and 7; Student
Amanda Strader sang at the Pacific Symphony Orchestra's
July 4 spectacular; Dr. Kris Leppien-Christensen
was appointed President-Elect of Psi Beta; new Psychology and Sociology
AA degrees for transfer will be offered this fall; Professor
Clifford Meyer and SC are now part of the Southern California
Transit Training Consortium, a regional consortium focused on technical
workforce development; 100 student athletes were named to the SC honor
roll, 14 of them with perfect 4.0 GPAs; VP of Student Services Juan
Avalos and VP of Instruction Don Busche
held a planning retreat focused on providing services for students;
transfer center counselors presented five workshops to assist students
in successful planning.
- Irvine
Valley College - President Glenn Roquemore's report
included mention of: IVC raised $370,734 in a three-year campaign
and the Bernard Osher Foundation added a 50% match for a total of $556,102
raised for new annual scholarships to assist low-income students; IVC
student Pedro Cruz won a prestigious American Chemical
Society scholarship of $10,000 to intern in groundbreaking materials
science research at UCI; Kids Kollege has been highly successful this
summer with 900 K-12 students registered; the IVC Performing Arts Center
has been busy with its first summer of rentals which provided IVC students
with first-hand professional experience as light board operators, assistant
stage managers and backstage crew for approximately 2,500 patrons; IVC's
social media has increased visits to IVC's website; 300,000 postcards
were mailed to promote fall classes; IVC athletes Matt Ivanoff,
Nicole Rivera, Thuy Hoang and Brandon Directo
were all named MVP this year.

The
board meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week
at www.socccd.edu. Television broadcasts are scheduled for 7 pm on Friday,
July 29 and Saturday, July 30, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and
Irvine Valley College Channel 33. SC TV39 has an additional broadcast
on Sunday, July 31 at 7 pm.
