Senate Award 2011
IVC's Classified
Senate was selected as a “Model Classified Senate” and recognized
with an award at the Classified Leadership Institute in Ventura, California
on June 24, 2011. The board congratulated the 2010-2011 Irvine Valley
College Classified Senate Board of Officers Angela Mahaney, Dennis
Gordon, Diana Walker, Joe San Juan and Gee Dickson
for their outstanding leadership and representation. |

Laura
U’Ren,
Career Placement Officer at Irvine Valley College, received a California
Community College Classified Senate Vision Award at the Classified Leadership
Institute in Ventura, California on June 24, 2011. The board recognized
her exemplary service to Irvine Valley College’s Classified Senate
beginning in 1989 and her leadership in establishing the first statewide
classified senate, now known as the State Classified Senate (4CS). |

Sherpa
Technical Development Team 2011 Blackboard Catalyst Award
The SOCCCD
IT Sherpa Technical Development Team received the 2011 Blackboard Catalyst
Committee’s Choice Award at the Blackboard World conference on July
15, 2011. The team was honored for its innovative development of a unique
notification system that supports student success via individualized,
event-triggered reminders, and communicates with students using email,
text messaging, and voice calls. The board congratulated the entire Sherpa
Product Development Team for their extraordinary initiatives to improve
student learning.

project costs of $324,914 for the Saddleback College James B. Utt Memorial
Learning Resource Center renovation project for a revised total of $12,864,289.
- additional
project costs of $24,852.28 to Condor, Inc. for a revised total of $1,109,586.28
for the pool deck replacement project at Saddleback College.
- Saddleback
College permanent division name change from Liberal Arts and Learning
Resources to Liberal Arts as part of the realignment of the Learning
Resources Division in October 2010.
- reallocation
of $2.7 million from the IVC Business Sciences and Technology lnnovation
project back to the IVC Fine Arts project.
- Revision
of the following board policies: BP-3110-Basic Aid Funds Allocation
Process, BP-4211-Retirement Benefits for Administrators and Classified
Management Personnel, BP-4081-Payroll Deductions, BP-4076-Compensation.
- Resolution
No. 11 -25 authorizing SlSC to become the District's Section 125 Plan
administrator with improved services to employees and an annual savings
of $7,900.

College
presidents Tod Burnett and Glenn Roquemore
and academic senate members, Lisa Davis Allen and
Bob Cosgrove gave an overview of the new proposed
district-wide strategic plan. The presentation included an explanation
of the six goals and 13 objectives for achieving those goals. The
PPT can be viewed here.

Saddleback
ASG students gave an overview of the student government budget and
funding initiatives for scholarships, student activities, campus life
initiatives and co-curricular programs. They also reviewed anticipated
sources of revenue. The approved budget can be viewed here.

Vice
Chancellor Debra Fitzsimons reviewed the Fiscal Year
2011-2012 annual district budget and thanked Fiscal Directors Beth
Mueller, Carol Hilton and Davit Khachatryan
for their hard work. She highlighted state cuts to categoricals and
Partnership in Excellence funds and reviewed tuition increases, basic
aid history and possible scenarios based on the state budget situation.
"It is not business as usual," she said. Her powerpoint

Saddleback
President Tod Burnett presented a
tribute on former U.S. President Ronald W. Reagan
and his relationship with Saddleback College. He highlighted letters,
photos and videos gathered from over the past 40 years. President
Burnett would like to donate the district's Ronald Reagan memorabilia
to the Ronald W. Reagan Library and Museum. Board President Nancy
Padberg asked for a more detailed listing of the items to
determine what should be donated.

REPORTSRTS
- Trustee
Bill Jay commented on the full campus and asked the
presidents about enrollment numbers. Trustee Frank Meldau
enjoyed the SC library tour and is looking forward to attending the
SC chili cookoff and IVC art gallery reception. He recently conducted
a self tour of both campuses and was pleased to meet many helpful staff.
Trustee Marcia Milchiker enjoyed attending a number
of flex week events including Chancellor's Opening Session and has registered
for four classes. She offered kudos to the college staff in registration
and other departments who are so helpful. She encouraged attendance
at the upcoming SC chili cookoff fundraiser to benefit the veteran's
memorial and veteran students. Trustee T.J. Prendergast
enjoyed touring the SC library renovation and also commented on the
"impressive" aquatics complex. He also enjoyed attending the Chancellor's
Opening Session and faculty association lunch. Board President Nancy
Padberg was proud to be a part of the Chancellor's Opening
Session. She recently attended the first meeting of the Orange County
Legislative Task Force which is chaired by Rancho Santiago CCD this
year. She will give a TV interview at Laguna Woods TV this week to report
on district activities. Trustee David Lang regrets
he could not attend flex week but is happy to be starting a new academic
year. Student Trustee Jordan Larson reported having
a great experience running for state student trustee, and though he
wasn't elected he enjoyed meeting all the student trustees and learned
a lot from the experience. He is looking forward to the SC Library opening
and to participating in an alumni water polo game at the new aquatics
center.
- Chancellor
Gary Poertner was absent from the meeting. Vice Chancellor
David Bugay filled in as acting Chancellor. He congratulated
IVC's model classified senate, IVC employee Laura U'Ren
and the District IT Sherpa development team on their resolutions. "You
make me proud to work here," he said.

Saddleback
College - President Tod Burnett's report included mention of: flex
week activities focused on student success and SC's top 10 goals;
presentation at Chancellor's Opening Session on SC's Vision 2020 completion
goals; website for associate faculty; management retreat in Palm Springs;
Seussical Jr. had two sold out performances and auditions
were held for Caberet, The Importance of Being Earnest,
and A Christmas Carol. Jazz, choral and music auditions;
a faculty concert; a student technical help website was created; 52
new international students admitted for fall; ASG leadership retreat
held Aug. 18; VETS program hosted training to educate faculty on classroom
needs for returning veterans; a new communications/graphics manual;
9/11 Commemoration ceremony to be held on Sept. 8 at 4 pm at the Veteran's
Memorial.

Valley College - President Glenn Roquemore's report
included mention of: presentation
at Chancellor's Opening Session on IVC's Vision 2020 completion goals;
Psi Beta member Theresa Lavery received a national
award from the American Psychological Association for a research paper;
extended education opportunities and tuition assistance available for
HVAC training; four days of student activities during welcome week invited
students to get involved and be heard; part-time faculty member Bill
Atkins won a contest by the California Coastal Commitssion
for his design of a new Whale Tail Ecoplate for California; innovative
new certificate program in recycling and Zero Waste begins Aug. 22 in
partnership with the Dept. of Labor; IVC Art Gallery will host Cosmic
Seduction: The Art of Daniel du Plessis form Sept. 1-Oct. 14 which explores
the universe and our place in it; 10th anniversary 9/11 Commemoration
to be held Friday, Sept. 9 from 12:00 to 12:30 pm at the IVC Performing
Arts Center.
- ATEP
- Associate Vice Chancellor Randy Peebles report included mention of:
SC and IVC continue to plan programs for the ATEP expansion; national
search for educational partners underway with CB Richard Ellis; SOCCCD
is pursuing federal funding through the New Markets Tax Credit program;
demolition of former marine buildings on the ATEP site is 50% completed;
discussions with City of Tustin and County of Orange continue for land
configuration enhancements; ATEP included in the long-range Education
and Facilities Master Plan and District Strategic Plan with district-wide
input.
