The Board of Trustees recognized Professors of the Year for 2008-09.

The resolution for Jeffrey S. Staley, Part-time Professor of the Year was accepted by Professor Brenda Borron.

Larry Perez, SC Full-time Professor of the Year, was also acknowledged.  He received a Board resolution in May in recognition of being named the Orange County Community College Professor of the Year by the Orange County Department of Education.

Tracey Magrann is the Saddleback College Part-time Professor of the Year.

• President Donald P. Wagner complimented both college presidents on the excellent 9-11 ceremonies. He thanked Chancellor Mathur and Tracy Daly for their consistently excellent work on events, and in particular the recent Leadership Reception.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes thanked the hosts of 9-11 event at IVC. It was a splendid program with a terrific turnout of elected and appointed leadership in Orange County. He complimented the spirit of cooperation at the recent Leadership Reception and gave a report on a meeting of the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force which is being chaired this year by North Orange County Community College District.

• Trustee William O. Jay expressed his support for President Wagner who is running for State Assembly.

• Trustee David B. Lang concurred with other trustees regarding the excellence of the 9-11 events and the Leadership Reception. He attended the E-300 Grand Opening / Unveiling at IVC, complimented the fine arts department on a terrific job and thanked President Roquemore and Vice President Justice for a tour. He extended a happy Rosh Shoshanna to all our Jewish colleagues.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker spoke about the SC Veterans Memorial and its unique design. She encouraged everyone to attend the upcoming annual chili cookoff fundraiser on November 18 which will feature hand-made bowls from the Ceramics Department and music from World War II era hits by the SC Jazz Band.

• Trustee Nancy M. Padberg attended the wonderful 9-11 ceremonies at both campuses and SC football games. She also attended the Leadership Reception during which she received a 10 year service pin.

• Student Trustee Bi'Anca Bailey attended SC football games and the SC President's Breakfast this month.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur mentioned that both 9-11 ceremonies were excellent and complimented Professor Bob Cosgrove on his comments during the SC event. He thanked President Wagner for serving as master of ceremonies at the Leadership Reception and to Trustees Fuentes, Lang and Padberg for their attendance. He presented recognition plaques to them at the event, and at the board meeting presented plaques to Trustees Jay, Milchiker and Williams . He also presented Trustee Jay with a five year service pin.

• SC President Tod Burnett's written report included mention of: inaugural President's Club breakfast; September 11 Remembrance Ceremony; yearlong art exhibition in the new California Court of Appeals featuring works by Emeritus Institute students and faculty; Lariat Fall Orientation Issue; most recent nursing and paramedic program graduates achieving a 100% pass rate on their exams; the Sociology department development of a gerontology certificate program; and Campus Police and Student Health Services staff participation in a State Chancellor's Office disaster management meeting.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore's written report included mention of: launch of the first College Success Program, a basic skills initiative with 44 students who will take classes together throughout the academic year; 17th Annual Tonya Reed Gardner Memorial Endowed Music Scholarship Benefits Recital featuring alumnus Raul Hernandez Vega; Casino Night fundraiser for students scholarships on October 16; September 11 ceremony with speakers Police Chief David Maggard, Jr., OC Fire Authority Chief Keith Richter, and OC Sherriff Sandra Hutchens; and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society open house.

• ATEP Provost Randy Peebles' written report included mention of: meetings with representatives from the Orange County Film Commission and Vital Link; well-attended community update session about ATEP's expansion plans; enrollment over 1,300 this semester; celebration event for the first cohort of students from the Orange County Rescue Mission who completed the 12-week Academic Foundations Summer Institute; and creation of the Southern California Precision Optics Consortium through the Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) at ATEP.

• the name change for the SC Division of Fine Arts to the Division of Fine Arts and Media Technology.

• contract with Neudesic LLC for software development enhancements in an amount not to exceed $1,650,000.

• basic aid priority list.

• contract with Prudential Insurance Company for life, accidental death and dismemberment, voluntary life, and long term disability insurance. The new contract will save the district approximately $646,828 annually for the next three years.

Presentations

• A presentation on SC and IVC data in the Accountability Reporting for Community Colleges (ARCC) report was made by President Roquemore and President Burnett. The ARCC is submitted by the State Chancellor's Office to the Governor and Legislature. Click here to view the state report.

The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3 at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33.  SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, October 4 at 7pm. The meeting will be available for viewing online later in the week.
