SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Ron Hastings, a Professor of Adapted Physical Education at SC, was presented with a resolution from the Board of Trustees in recognition of his receiving the Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year award from the State Commission on Physical Education (SCOPE).
The South Orange County Forensics Team of IVC and SC students received a resolution from the Board of Trustees in recognition of their winning the National Parliamentary Debate Association community college sweepstakes for the fifth consecutive year. IVC Professor Gary Rybold accepted the resolution on behalf of the team.
Student Trustee for 2006-07, Elizabeth Kelly, attended the meeting with her mother, Miriam Kelly. The IVC student will be sworn in next month.
Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur presented to the Board  of Trustees the 2006 Workforce Development Award from the Orange County Business Council, given to the South Orange County Community College District, along with the other community college districts in Orange County. The Chancellor is pictured, second from right, with a contingent from OCBC on a recent trip to Sacramento.

REPORTS AND COMMENTS

• Board President David B. Lang extended his congratulations and appreciation to outgoing Student Trustee Paul Ho , SC ASG President Taylor Ames and ASIVC President Nina Nawabi.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg clarified, for those giving public comment, that the Board of Trustees had not yet been consulted about the recommendation to eliminate IVC intercollegiate tennis.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes encouraged everyone to attend the IVC Foundation dinner on Tuesday, April 25 featuring Huell Houser.

• Trustee William O. Jay recently toured the University of Chicago on a trip to visit his son and new grandson.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker thanked all who attended the meeting to discuss IVC tennis and mentioned that her son played tennis while in high school.

• Trustee Donald P. Wagner mentioned that there was no compromise in students' ability to access information on the Internet in campus libraries, even though the Board of Trustees has not approved institutional membership in the American Library Association. He noted that institutional memberships are a policy issue, appropriate for Board consideration and action.

• Student Trustee Paul Ho recently attended the honor society conference in Seattle , WA and interacted with SC students and Dean Kevin O'Connor . He complimented Tracy Daly and District staff on the recent publication of the Report to the Community. In his parting comments about the opportunities in being Student Trustee, he expressed his gratitude to his fellow Trustees, Chancellor Mathur , IVC President Glenn R. Roquemore , IVC Vice President Dennis White, student government presidents Nina Nawabi and Taylor Ames, and all students, faculty, staff and administrators.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur thanked all students and members of the public who spoke so passionately about the IVC tennis issue. The four Orange County Community College Districts are joining together in full page newspaper ads in the Orange County Register and community editions this week to communicate the positive impact we have on the regional economy. He congratulated and thanked student leaders Paul Ho, Nina Nawabi and Taylor Ames.

• SC President Richard McCullough's written report included mention of: a presentation to Mission Viejo City Council on the high return on investment of community colleges; over 800 potential students visited the campus on Senior Day resulting in many “Early Bird” program applications; Fine Arts division performances and exhibits; upcoming Emeritus Institute's 30th anniversary celebration; student films in the Newport Beach Film Festival; Tech Prep Day; and promotion of summer classes.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: student scholars received cash awards at an Honors Transfer Council of California conference; two honors students were named to the Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic Team; second-year language student won first prize at the Japanese Intercollegiate Speech Contest; and installation of wireless infrastructure allows connection to the Internet from anywhere on campus.

• ATEP Provost Robert J. Kopecky 's written report included mention of: progress on the property, planning activities, marketing and public relations efforts, and partnership meetings. Provost Kopecky stated that the CACT program is conducting courses in laser optics for the Raytheon Corporation. He congratulated SC for the student film to be showcased at the Newport Beach Film Festival, which was taped at ATEP.

• Addressing the Board were a number of students, faculty, members of the community, and: Wendy Gabriella, IVC Academic Senate; Claire Cesareo-Silva, SC Academic Senate; Lewis Long, Faculty Association; and Mark Sierakowski, SC Classified Senate.

DISCUSSION, PRESENTATIONS, INFORMATION

• Arnold Bray, of School Services of California, Inc. based in Sacramento , provided a summary of current state legislation affecting community colleges, the state budget process, continuation of the district's basic aid, and the proposed ballot initiative to stabilize funding and student fees. To date, community colleges are slated to get an increase in funding over the current fiscal year.

• The Board discussed establishing guidelines regarding professional development to enhance their knowledge and skills.

• Following a thorough analysis, the IVC Athletics Department faculty made the recommendation to discontinue intercollegiate tennis. Following extensive public comment, the Board requested that more information be presented at the May Board meeting.

• The Board received an update on upcoming changes to the wait list process which will occur during the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters.

Prior to the regular Board meeting, a special meeting was held for discussion of the roles and responsibilities of various constituent groups.  The meeting was facilitated by, from left, State Academic Senate President Ian Walton and CCLC Interim Executive Director Diane Woodruff, with a review of Accreditation Standard IV, Leadership and Governance, provided by Accrediting Commission Executive Director Barbara Beno.

TELEVISED BOARD MEETING

• The Board meeting will be broadcast at 7pm on Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29 on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33. SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, April 30 at 7pm.
