BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS April 25, 2005

UNANIMOUS VOTE FOR NEW FACULTY CONTRACT

• On a vote of 7 to 0, the Board unanimously approved a new three year academic employee master agreement.  It includes pay increases effective from July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2007 for 301 full time and 927 part time faculty members.  Faculty will receive a five percent increase in their base rate of pay each year. Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur presented an overview of the new contract. Cumulative additional costs to the district are estimated at $13.7 million over the three years of the agreement. “This is an excellent contract and keeps our district competitive with other community colleges in the state,” said the Chancellor. He expressed gratitude to the Board of Trustees for approving the contract, and to the hard-working negotiating teams.  Faculty who contributed to the current agreement included: Suzanne Crawford, Lee Haggerty, Bill Hewitt, Lewis Long, Rich Potratz, Connie Caputo-Spar, Martin Welc , and Ken Woodward .  From the District, those who contributed to the agreement included: Gary Poertner, Thomas Anderson, Teddi Lorch , and Bruce Barsook.  Several Trustees congratulated Chancellor Mathur for his leadership in the settlement of the faculty contract.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS and RECOGNITION	Dr. Daniel Luzko performed an original piano composition, and then was joined in another piece by Dr. Janice Pyle. Both are piano instructors at IVC. Dr. Luzko was recently commissioned to write a piece of music by Catholic University in Washington , D.C. to honor the Korean War Memorial.
Irvine Valley College received a resolution to recognize their 20th anniversary as a college.
The Saddleback College Model United Nations Team received a resolution to recognize their receiving a “distinguished delegation award” while competing against more than 250 teams from colleges and universities around the world.

REPORTS AND COMMENTS

• Board President David B. Lang congratulated the cast, crew, and Professor Carmen Dominguez on the Saddleback College Fine Arts Department production of 42 nd Street , which re-opened the McKinney Theatre.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg thanked everyone who worked on a special reception to celebrate the reopening of McKinney Theatre and noted that the facility now has a state of the art system for the training of our students. She congratulated both Saddleback College and IVC Model U.N. Teams on their successes this year.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes mentioned the recent death of Frank H. Grienke, a Trustee who served the District from 1975 to 1977. He gave a report on the activities of the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force.

• Trustee William O. Jay congratulated everyone who worked on the faculty contract. He mentioned a report commissioned by San Diego Community College District which showed the higher salaries their students earn by attending community college, and the impact of that district on the local economy.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker recognized the extraordinary professors and students of our Colleges. She is looking forward to commencement and the celebration of the hard work of our faculty, staff and students.

• Trustee Donald P. Wagner noted that the wealth of talent of our faculty is staggering. He encouraged members of the community, no matter what their talent, to look into the programs at the colleges.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur announced that he will be in Sacramento this week with the Orange County Business Council meeting with legislators. He congratulated teachers of the year, Professors Bob Parsons from Saddleback College and Dottie Sherling from IVC.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: Georgia McClusky named Classified Employee of the Year; two student photographers named finalists in a national photography contest; art history instructor Thomas Folland will present a paper at a symposium in New York; Model United Nations Team wins two regional wards; associate professor of music, Dr. Stan Breckenridge , named Fulbright Scholar.

• Saddleback College President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: 20th annual Liberal Arts and Learning Resources Division writing contest honors nearly 20 students; ASG's 17th annual writing contest for high schools honors 12 students; Senior Day for high school student recruitment; Transfer Center hosts college night fair; Fine Arts highlights; donation to Automotive Technology and Aviation program; fashion show; and the Special Services program enrolling over 100 students with disabilities.

• Advanced Technology and Education Park (ATEP) Provost Robert J. Kopecky 's written report included mention of: progress of Navy demolition of deteriorating buildings at the ATEP site; work with Hartford Insurance to identify a construction company for the completion of buildings; rental of helicopter hangar for a photo and video shoot; and meetings with the City of Tustin .

• Several Trustees; Chancellor Mathur; Wendy Gabriella, President of IVC Academic Senate; and Lewis Long, President of the Faculty Association, recognized Dr. Carmen Dominguez and her service as President of Saddleback College Academic Senate.

• agreement with consultants CCbenefits to perform a socioeconomic impact study to document the impact that our colleges have on the local economy, in terms of jobs and incomes. All four community college districts in the county are participating in similar studies.

• agreement with GKK and Maas Companies to provide consulting services for an educational and facilities master plan.

• authorizing Trustee John Williams to sign the diploma conferring an Associate in Arts degree to his daughter, Saddleback College student Lauren Christine Williams.

• purchase and installation of 200 desktop computers for Saddleback College.

• change in organization reporting structure at Saddleback College. Effective May 1, there will be two separate divisions of (1) Fine Arts with Rocco Cifone as Dean, and (2) Physical Education and Athletics with Anthony Lipold as Dean.

• Saddleback College Summer 2005 study abroad program in Sydney, Australia.

• hiring a geotechnical consultant to conduct testing for the IVC Maintenance/Police Facilities.

• award of bid for $129,350 for IVC parking lot and sidewalk repairs.

• award of bid for $175,998 for carpet and vinyl flooring for IVC buildings.

• grant proposal for $178,875 to the State Chancellor's Office for the Center for Applied Competitive Technologies renewal at IVC.

DISCUSSION AND INFORMATION ITEMS OF NOTE

• Professor Dorothy Sherling of the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering has been selected as the Irvine Valley College 2006 Full-time Teacher of the Year, and Instructor Barry Pearlstein from the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering as Part-time Teacher of the Year.

• The Board tabled until the May meeting a continued discussion regarding recommendations from the accreditation teams.

CORRESPONDENCE

• Correspondence in the Board agenda packet included letters and notes: Assemblyman Todd Spitzer thanked Chancellor Mathur for his letter regarding legislative priorities; National Council on Student Development announced Bill Hewitt as the 2005 recipient of the Achievement of Excellence Award; publisher of Photographer's Forum magazine announced that IVC student Naoto Hayasaka was a photography contest finalist from over 36,000 entries; a parent thanked Saddleback College Dean James Wright for spending time with incoming freshmen; Saddleback College student, Sandy Eulitt, who received a $1,000 Society of Physics scholarship, thanked Professor Katherine Meyer-Canales and Dean Wright.
