AND COMMENTS
- President David
B. Lang conveyed his excitement over the recent
Saddleback College Health Sciences Building dedication.
Such celebratory events are important during times of change.
As President he is trying to remain accessible and take
concerns seriously. He reminded everyone to make to make
sure they are promoting a positive culture and mutual understanding.
- Vice President Nancy
M. Padberg attended dedication ceremonies and
complimented the good work of Tracy Daly, Diane Turner and
the planning committee. She is looking forward to the re-opening
of the McKinney Theatre in April. She attended many athletic
events this month and lauded both Colleges for their wonderful
sports programs.
- Trustee William
O. Jay noted that the District is in the process
of hiring over 50 full time faculty members. This is an
important process, considering many will remain in the District
for 20 to 25 years. He thanked everyone who will be serving
on the hiring committees.
- Trustee Marcia Milchiker
reminded students of the March 2 deadline to apply
for Cal grants. She proudly represented the Board at the
IVC Phi Theta Kappa honor society induction ceremony. The
Saddleback College nursing program is one of only eight
in the country to receive a Carnegie Foundation grant. She
congratulated everyone for a job well done and expressed
her pride in the Colleges.
- Student Trustee Brittany
Poulton thanked the faculty who are participating
in the basketball game on March 4 and encouraged everyone
to attend. [Friday, March 4, 6pm, IVC Hart Gymnasium] All
proceeds of the match between IVC and Saddleback College
faculty will go toward Tsunami relief. She also thanked
College and District administrators for their support of
the event, and congratulated the District Speech and Debate
Team on their first place win in a recent tournament.
- Chancellor Raghu
P. Mathur reported that, following Board request,
the monthly financial status report is now posted on the
web site and will be shown during the telecast of the Board
meeting. He encouraged Trustees to attend the Association
of Governing Boards conference in San Diego in April. He
attended the IVC Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony and
is looking forward to attending IVC's Wind Symphony concert.
- IVC President Glenn
Roquemore proudly announced that the District Speech
and Debate Team won a national tournament. His written report
included mention of: Astounding Inventions raised a record
$21,000 for scholarships and upgrades to the Channel 33
system.
- Saddleback
College
President Richard McCullough's written
report included mention of: presentation of partnership
awards to hospitals; 2005 Women's Conference on March 5
at 9am in BGS 210; African Mosaics of Uganda exhibit through
March 10; KSBR back on air after technical problems; and
partnership with Materialise of Belgium for rapid prototyping
training.
- ATEP Provost Robert
J. Kopecky's written report included mention of:
meetings with administrators and faculty on program development;
exploring partnerships with government agencies related
to homeland security; and exploring relocation of The Pacific
Coast High School to the ATEP campus.

was tabled until the March meeting. Item 10, Saddleback College
study abroad in Santander , Spain , was not approved. If you
wish to know specifics, please contact the Office of the President
or Deputy Chancellor.
- recognizing 10 faculty members
who are eligible for tenure. From Saddleback College : David
Francisco, Phillis Kucharski, Katherine Meyer-Canales, June
Millovich, Bill Stevenson, Rita Tamer, and Karla Westphal.

- termination of the agreement
with Turnkey, Inc. for relocateable classroom buildings for
the Advanced Technology and Education Park (ATEP). The company
has declared bankruptcy. The project is insured through The
Hartford Fire Insurance Company.
- reviewing and updating the
district's educational and facilities master plan. Last completed
in 2001, the process is conducted periodically to determine
if goals and objectives should be changed and provides guidelines
for planning. Consultants will guide the process with the
involvement of a steering committee of administrators, faculty
and staff.
- hiring GKK Architects of Newport
Beach to perform a feasibility study for a new Science/Applied
Science Building that would include functions from the existing
TAS Building and the Math/Science Engineering Building. The
study will evaluate the benefits of renovating existing buildings
versus constructing a new facility at Saddleback College.

- Mr. Lou Bone, Mayor of Tustin,
as the 2005 IVC commencement speaker.
- Ms. Lori Serrato Olin as the
2005 Saddleback College commencement speaker. She is a graduate
of the College and a well known columnist and public relations
consultant.
PUBLIC
HEARING. . .
The
Board conducted a public hearing to allow comments on the:
- District's initial proposal
to reopen contract negotiations with CSEA Chapter 586.
- proposed dedication of easements
for electrical systems, street, highway, utility, landscape
maintenance, and other public purposes at the ATEP campus
in Tustin.

- Both Colleges received the
good news that their accreditation
has been reaffirmed from the Accrediting Commission for Community
and Junior Colleges. The Chancellor reviewed accreditation
goals and strategies which include developing an educational
and facilities master plan, developing student learning outcomes
for courses which assess student achievement, and recognizing
and celebrating accomplishments of all employees.
- Reports from IVC and SC Foundations.
The Foundations distributed more than $500,000 in scholarships
to students, in addition to providing much needed support
for academic programs and capital facilities.
CORRESPONDENCE
- Correspondence in the Board
agenda packet included letters and notes: from Irvine Mayor
Beth Krom thanking IVC President Roquemore
for his letter of congratulations; complimenting the instruction
of Dr. Priscilla Agnew in a philosophy class
at Saddleback College ; and acknowledging a donation from
Chappell/MarathonFoto in Fairfield , Iowa to the Marine Toys
for Tots in the name of Saddleback College.
CLOSED SESSION
Clerk of the Board Thomas Fuentes
announced:
- on a 6 to 0 vote the Board
granted a one month leave with benefits without pay to a classified
employee.
- on a 7 to 0 vote the Board
authorized initiation of litigation and the defendants and
other particulars shall, once formally commenced, be disclosed
to any person upon inquiry, subject to the provisions of Government
Code Section 54957.1 (a)(2).

Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5, at 7pm, on Saddleback
College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33. SC
TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday at 7pm. At 6:30pm,
prior to broadcast of the board meeting, an interview will
be aired of Trustee Fuentes on Leisure World TV6 taped on
March 2.
