REPORTS AND COMMENTS

• Board President David B. Lang remembered Tom Wall who died recently, and his lasting legacy of service and scholarship support to IVC. He thanked Jerry Rudmann and the IVC Student Learning Outcomes Committee for their outstanding work to assess student learning outcomes. He commended Trustee Nancy Padberg for traveling to North Carolina on a site visit with Chancellor Raghu Mathur and Provost Robert Kopecky.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg described the site visit to Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in North Carolina and the possibilities it presented of business involvement at ATEP. She attended the final performance of Smokey Joe's Cafe and was impressed with the state of the art sound and lighting system that was installed in the SC McKinney Theatre last year. She remembered Tom Wall and his support of IVC.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes thanked Chancellor Mathur for his leadership in organizing the upcoming reception for the new CEO of the Community College League of California, Scott Lay. The event brings together the four community college districts. He invited everyone to attend the City of Lake Forest Fourth of July parade in which he and the Chancellor will be riding in the parade to the theme of “ Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College: Your Community Colleges."

• Trustee William O. Jay congratulated ATEP for making great strides as shown in the production of a student handbook/class schedule for Fall 2007 and a brochure for businesses. He congratulated IVC on their two new degree programs of Japanese and art history, and the SC Civic Light Opera on the wonderful music in Smokey Joe's Café.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker attended the SC Civic Light Opera's final sold out performance of Smokey Joe's Café , and is looking forward to the production of Footloose in July. She acknowledged the passing of Tom Wall and an 87 year old student and resident of Laguna Woods Village.

• Student Trustee Elizabeth Kelly mentioned that summer classes are a great opportunity to learn on a “compressed schedule”. She attended the Orange County Forum and is looking forward to a student trustee workshop in July. She is hoping to write a column for The Lariat to inform students of what she is doing for them as Student Trustee and is discussing a book rental program with administrators.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur remembered Tom Wall and what a pleasure it was to work with him when he was president of IVC. Although emphasizing that there is still work to be done, he shared the good news that summer enrollment at SC is up 11% and IVC is up 4% over last year. He thanked Provost Kopecky for organizing the excellent site visit to North Carolina . He attended the IVC and SC Foundation retreats during which both organizations were planning exciting activities. He announced that the District Report to the Community won a prestigious gold statue PROTOS award from the Public Relations Society of America Orange County Chapter, competing against private and public sector entries.

• SC President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: placing seventh out of 43 California Community Colleges in the Honors Transfer Alliance Program; ranking fifth in the state in credit distance education FTES; Veteran's Memorial sculpture event; rapid prototyping program was asked to create a three dimensional reproduction of the Lewis and Clark expedition rifle; and the Summer Jazz Camp for young aspiring musicians to play with the pros.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: the first Emeritus Institute printed class schedule; two new associate in art degrees in Art History and Japanese; men's volleyball Head Coach Tom Pestolesi and Assistant Coach Eric Olson were named Orange Empire Conference co-coaches of the year; the Honor Society collected food and books during commencement for distribution to Orangewood Children's' Home and Second Harvest Food Bank. He mentioned that the campus flag was recently flown at half mast in honor of Tom Wall.

• ATEP Provost Robert J. Kopecky 's written report included mention of: with site preparation complete, the pre-engineered buildings are being assembled for the campus; CACT received $205,000 renewal grant from the State; new marketing brochure; hiring of consultants to assist in establishing criteria for evaluating partnership proposals; and an educational site visit to the Enka campus of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in North Carolina.

• Addressing the Board were: Ken Woodward, Faculty Association; Carol Spencer, CSEA; and Rebecca Cunningham, SC Associated Student Government.

• The Board received information about privatization and contracting out within the limitations imposed by the California Education Code.

• Information items from ATEP: official approval was received to establish ATEP from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges; ATEP was named as a partner in the Orange County Animation Project grant of $450,000 along with other educational and business industry partners; a document entitled ATEP Assets and Challenges has been prepared to assist in understanding the issues involved in the Fall 2007 launch of ATEP; and a draft has been prepared of the Fall 2007 ATEP class schedule and handbook.

• Correspondence in the Board agenda packet included a letter extending appreciation to Anne Akers, IVC Outreach Specialist.

TELEVISED BOARD MEETING

• The Board meeting will be broadcast at 7pm on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1 on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33. SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, July 2 at 7pm.
