AND COMMENTS
- Vice President Nancy
M. Padberg thanked everyone who attended the meeting
and acknowledged Connie Zucker for initiating that classified
staff introduce themselves during the public comment portion
of board meetings. She voiced her support for the IVC Commencement
Committee's recommendation to have the ceremony at 6pm.
She attended Saddleback College men's basketball playoffs,
and announced that she recently completed her third L. A.
Marathon.
- Clerk of the Board Thomas
A. Fuentes participated in the Saddleback College
Latina Mother Daughter Day. He expressed appreciation to
Maria Paniagua, EOPS Outreach Specialist, for her efforts
in organizing the event which included the Consul of Mexico
as a special guest. He attended Classified Staff Development
Day and gave a report on the activities of the Orange County
Community Colleges' Legislative Task Force (OCLTF). He encouraged
everyone to voice their support for full funding of the
Perkins Vocational and Technical Education program now before
Congress.
- Trustee William
O. Jay congratulated IVC Professor Bill Hewitt
who was awarded the 2005 Achievement of Excellence Award
by the American Association of Community Colleges. He acknowledged
requesting that the summer study abroad program in Spain
be brought back before the Board for reconsideration, and
thanked Administration for their hard work in responding
to issues.
- Trustee Marcia Milchiker
led a moment of silence for two Saddleback College
employees who recently died: Ellie Hodge and Billy Kelly.
She recognized IVC instructor Ted Weatherford who was named
Educator of the Year by the State Community College Organization
of Physical Educators. She announced that the Saddleback
College Theatre Arts Department's “Angels in America ” was
listed as best college production by OC Weekly.
She attended the faculty basketball game to benefit Tsunami
relief efforts and the Classified Staff Development Day.
- Trustee Donald P.
Wagner thanked everyone who corresponded with the
Board about the Saddleback College summer study abroad trip
to Spain, and those who took the time to comment at the
meeting. He congratulated Professor Hewitt on his award.
- Trustee John S.
Williams mentioned that he would like to work out
the issue of when IVC will hold the commencement ceremony.
- Student Trustee Brittany
Poulton discussed her support of the Saddleback
College Spain summer study abroad program.
- Chancellor Raghu
P. Mathur, as chair of OCLTF, met with Congressman
Gary Miller to advocate in favor of the Perkins program.
The Congressman expressed confidence that the bill will
have support from the Senate, House and President. He presented
the Chancellor with a flag that was flown over the Capitol
during the dedication ceremonies of the Saddleback College
Health Sciences Building. Proposed versions of the state
community college budget include a COLA range of 3.93% to
4.1%; enrollment growth of 1.9% to 3%; and an increase in
student fees from $26 to $33 per unit. Any increase in student
fees will likely be opposed by all Orange County community
college districts.
- IVC President Glenn
Roquemore 's written report included mention of:
$31,335 grant received to the Supportive Services Program
to mentor students for careers in childhood education; music
professor Daniel Luzko will have a composition premiere
in Washington, D.C. next month; an alumna establishes a
school in Sri Lanka for children orphaned by the tsunami;
and PTK Honor Society, Alpha Omega Mu Chapter, received
a national Pinnacle Award for membership growth.
- Saddleback College President
Richard McCullough's written report included
mention of: employee giving campaign, Champion SC, raised
$16,000; neighboring high school students were invited to
campus this month for Senior Day; students raised $1,200
for tsunami relief in February; plant sale to benefit horticulture
scholarships is set for April 21-22; and the April 8 performance
of "42nd Street" marks the grand reopening of
the newly upgraded McKinney Theatre.
- Advanced Technology and
Education Park (ATEP) Provost Robert J. Kopecky
is looking forward to the Saddleback College Film
Festival in April because some of the student work was filmed
on the ATEP campus. His written report included mention
of: Navy demolition of buildings and cleaning of the helicopter
hanger; work with Hartford Insurance to identify a construction
company to complete campus buildings; and continued development
of course and program offerings.

CONSENT
ITEMS OF NOTE, THE BOARD APPROVED. . .
- accepting an award of $2,000
to Saddleback College from the City of Mission Viejo to implement
the Marine Fossil Interpretive Display Project.
- an agreement between Saddleback
College and Saddleback Memorial Hospital to accept $170,000
to supplement the salary of a full-time and associate faculty.
The Hospital will provide clinical space for 11 students,
and 11 nursing students will be assigned to the Hospital for
four semesters.
- placing a permanent bronze
plaque at the base of a tree dedicated to IVC groundskeeper
William “Howard” Rockefeller.

Bob Parsons
of the Division of Math, Science and Engineering has been
selected as the Saddleback College Teacher of the Year 2006.
- The Board tabled until the

CORRESPONDENCE
- Correspondence in the Board
agenda packet included letters and notes: from Superior Court
Judge James P. Gray congratulating IVC Foundation
on the Astounding Inventions event; from a student
complimenting the instruction of IVC Professor
Kurt Meyer in a writing class; thanking IVC
Vice President Gwen Vendley for her presentation
at the 30th Annual Association of California Community College
Administrators Conference; and thanking IVC President
Roquemore for serving as a judge at the 24th Annual
Irvine Unified School District Science Fair.

Fuentes announced:
- On
a 6 to 1 vote the Board voted to pursue all legal remedies
including initiation of litigation to recover sabbatical leave
payment from a former faculty member.
- On
a 7 to 0 vote the Board voted to allow unpaid leave with benefits
for up to three months for a classified employee.
