SPECIAL RECOGNITION The Board presented resolutions honoring the 2005 Teachers of the Year. Dorothy Sherling IVC Full-time Teacher of the Year Barry Pearlstein IVC Part-time Teacher of the Year Bob Parsons SC Full-time Teacher of the Year Susan Hecht SC Part-time Teacher of the Year   Professor Sherling was on hand to receive her resolution, joined in the photo by IVC President Glenn Roquemore and Student Trustee Paul Ho.

REPORTS AND COMMENTS

• Board President David B. Lang thanked Trustee Marcia Milchiker for ensuring that the Teachers of the Year received Board recognition. He complimented IVC on their Veterans Day ceremony last week and the ATEP staff for their successful breakfast. He attended the SC Foundation gala and a 40 th anniversary celebration for UCI. He expressed optimism about the progress being made within the District.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg commended ATEP Provost Robert Kopecky and staff for a job well done on the breakfast for business leaders. She attended the IVC Veterans Day ceremony, SC Foundation gala, and many athletic events. She participated with several Board members in a session with visiting Accreditation Team members. At the invitation of Student Trustee Ho , she went on a tour of IVC which included observing a class in session.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes gave a report on the activities of the Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force. The Task Force is hosting a breakfast for Orange County state legislators on Friday December 2 in Anaheim at the offices of North Orange County Community College District. He expressed appreciation to IVC for the patriotic experience of their Veteran's Day celebration, and pride in Student Trustee Ho who attended in uniform.

• Trustee William O. Jay expressed get well wishes to Bill Hewitt who is recovering from open heart surgery. He mentioned that the SC Foundation gala was very well done and featured wonderful music. The dedication of the Board was in evidence recently as shown by almost the entire Board attending the meeting with Accreditation Team members.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker thanked Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur for following through with the Board resolutions honoring the Teachers of the Year, something that hopefully will be done on an annual basis. She thanked all the teachers, classified staff and administrators in the District who “make it all possible.” She attended the IVC Wind Symphony and Orchestra concert and acknowledged the excellent work of President Roquemore, Steve Rochford, and the IVC Foundation. She also attended the SC Foundation gala and ATEP breakfast.

• Trustee Donald P. Wagner expressed appreciation to all the Board members who participated in the give and take with the Accreditation Teams. He extended get well wishes to Bill Hewitt.

• Trustee John S. Williams thanked those individuals who attended the SC Foundation gala and those who donated to the silent auction. The SC Foundation has reached their goal of raising over $200,000 for scholarships.

• Student Trustee Paul Ho expressed appreciation to Professor Sherling , IVC's Full-time Teacher of the Year. He was proud to participate in the IVC Veteran's Day ceremony. He complimented President Roquemore on his keynote speech at the Phi Beta Kappa leadership conference. Through corporate sponsors, IVC's Phi Theta Kappa recently hosted 67 disadvantaged middle school students to the King Tut exhibit in Los Angeles.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur congratulated all the Teachers of the Year. He congratulated ATEP Provost Kopecky and staff on the successful breakfast, and President Richard McCullough and Foundation Director Michelle Anstadt on the well attended SC Foundation gala. He was pleased to see that IVC is continuing their tradition of having a Veteran's Day ceremony, and expressed appreciation to President Roquemore. He recently spoke to the Kiwanis Club in Laguna Woods Village and met with SC Student President Taylor Ames.

• Chancellor Mathur overviewed the results of a recent study which documented the impressive socioeconomic benefits that our Colleges have on the community. SOCCCD contributes a total of $1.7 billion in Orange County income and toward the creation of 26,600 jobs.  Our students enjoy a 15.3% return on their investment of time and money.  For every dollar invested by taxpayers, there is a 14.3% return.  Our Colleges are making a difference in the lives of our students and in the economy of Orange County.

• SC President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: rapid prototyping program was highlighted in the Saddleback Valley News; Transfer Day featured more than 50 colleges and universities; paramedic program graduation; athletic accomplishments; career/job fairs for nursing and auto tech departments; and the Lariat received 18 awards of excellence from the Journalism Association of Community Colleges.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: exhibition of digital and photographic streetscapes at the Art Gallery; IVC Police delivered pizzas to Irvine residents as part of Red Ribbon Week; the Chess Club celebrated Halloween by creating a human chessboard of 32 students; PTK hosted a field trip for 67 disadvantaged middle schools students to the Tutankhamen exhibit at the LA County Museum of Art.

• ATEP Provost Robert J. Kopecky 's written report included mention of: November 2 Business Roundtable Breakfast was attended by more than 200; continued work with Hartford Insurance to identify potential construction companies for completion of ATEP buildings; continued efforts with the City of Tustin and Orange County Rescue Mission to aid hurricane victims; and meetings with potential partners to locate programs and projects at ATEP.

• Addressing the Board were a number of staff and faculty and: Connie Zucker , CSEA; Mark Sierakowski , SC Classified Senate; Cloyce Kelly , POA; Neena Nawabi , Associated Students of IVC; and Taylor Ames, SC Associated Student Government. 

CORRESPONDENCE

• Correspondence in the Board agenda packet included a letter extending appreciation to SC math professor Nancy Evans.

CLOSED SESSION

• On a 7 to 0 vote, the Board authorized a settlement agreement with Thomas F. Anderson, Vice Chancellor of Educational Services, pursuant to which Dr. Anderson will resign as an administrator effective August 14, 2006.

TELEVISED BOARD MEETING

• The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19, at 7pm on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33. SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, November 20 at 7pm.
