Calvin Nelson is to be employed as Interim Vice President of Instruction at IVC. Dr. Nelson is a retired SC faculty member who also served in a variety of administrative capacities.

A moment of silence was held for Saddleback College Police Officer Cynthia Guerra-Payan who died in a motorcycle accident on October 29. The Chancellor and the Board of Trustees expressed their condolences to her family and fellow officers.

A resolution was presented recognizing IVC instructor and video production specialist Sonya Bangston and IVC students Nancy Luster and Wendell Chong. The students won first prize at the California Community Colleges Satellite Network Students Film and Video Festival.

The Lariat staff accepted a resolution honoring the student newspaper, a finalist for the second year in a row for the prestigious Pacemaker Award because of its commitment to excellence in journalism.

Geofrey English received a resolution because of his dedication to SC since 1984 as Director of Performing Arts and Producer of the Saddleback Civic Light Opera.

• Trustee William O. Jay attended a stellar performance of the SC Big Band, directed by Joey Sellers , and encouraged everyone to attend future performances of this group which features a diversity of musicians. He welcomed Dr. Cal Nelson to IVC and congratulated the SC Foundation and HSHSEI Division for their terrific capital drive that has raised $3 million.

• Trustee Donald P. Wagner attended the audit committee meeting with Trustees Williams and Milchiker. The audit report was quite good and he thanked Beth Mueller, Carol Hilton and Davit Khachatryan for a job well done.

• Clerk of the Board Thomas A. Fuentes reported on the state priorities of the OC Community Colleges Legislative Task Force which include improving student transfer opportunities, maintaining local governance, workforce preparation, and supporting facility improvement programs. He offered his congratulations to the community leaders in Mission Viejo, Irvine and Lake Forest , cities which were listed among the safest cities in the U.S. in a recent FBI survey.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg mentioned that SC police contribute to the safety of Mission Viejo. She attended SC football games and homecoming, and commented that IVC and SC have excellent athletic programs which all serve to support academic programs.

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker said she was gratified to see that Geof English was honored with a board resolution as he brought so much excellence to the SC performing arts program. She attended the SC homecoming game and reminded everyone to vote on proposition 1D that would bring $14 million to the SC library renovation project.

• Trustee John S. Williams congratulated the City of Mission Viejo on being the third safest city in America , and acknowledged the contributions of the SC police department in that accomplishment. He encouraged attendance at the upcoming Surf City gala by the SC Foundation to raise money for scholarships.

• Student Trustee Elizabeth Kelly reported that she was named OC Register student of the week, authored a guest column in the Lariat, and continues to be actively involved in Phi Theta Kappa activities.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur attended the OC Department of Education event honoring the outstanding teachers of the year, including Dr. Norman Weston from SC and James Granitto from IVC. He recently participated as a panelist at a conference sponsored by OC Business Council and the Workforce Investment Board. He and Trustee Williams attended an OC School Board Association event at which the keynote speaker was a SC graduate. He also attended an economic forecast meeting sponsored by Cal State Fullerton and OC Business Council.

• SC President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: Gaucho Football Team's ranking as first in the nation; SC will receive the 2006 Chancellor's Award for Best Practices in Student Equity; Fine Arts fall performances; instructor Phillis Kucharski was selected for the 2006 Nursing Excellence Award; over 400 students participated in Red Ribbon week career fair; SC Alumna of the Year, Lynn Holly Johnson, was awarded the State of California Alumni Award; and four awards received from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: psychology professor Dr. Kari Tucker will have her research work published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology ; the campus clock tower was dismantled and removed; student Kathleen Settels ' poem was chosen from among 1,600 entries worldwide for publication in the PTK International Honor Society's literary anthology; and a competition with the British national debate team for the fifth consecutive year.

• ATEP Provost Robert J. Kopecky 's written report included mention of: buildings have begun arriving and are being assembled on the new campus; a ceremony honoring Raytheon technicians who are graduating from the CACT laser-electro optics technician training class; and participation in the 18th Annual Conference for the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers.
