PRESENTATIONS   Paul Ho, an Irvine Valley College chemistry and economics major, was sworn in by President David B. Lang as the student member of the Board of Trustees.
	Alan Gallup received a Board Resolution for his leadership as Chair of the Saddleback College Foundation's Teaching Tomorrow's Life Savers campaign which raised $3.3 million.  Mr. Gallup is an alumni of Saddleback College, and served on the Foundation Board of Governors for 13 years.
	A team led by District Information Technology was recognized for receiving a “Technology Focus Award” for SmartSchedule from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

• The Board voted to approve a leave of absence for Saddleback College Professor Terri Whitt to assist in hurricane recovery efforts.

REPORTS AND COMMENTS

• Board President David B. Lang expressed his appreciation to classified employees.  Although discussions related to contract negotiations occur in closed session, he said that the Board will consider the Johnson & Associates classification study.

• Vice President Nancy M. Padberg participated in many events this past month, including Board forums at both Colleges.  She encouraged everyone to attend the faculty basketball tournament to benefit hurricane victims, Friday, September 30 at 7pm in the IVC Hart Gymnasium.  She mentioned the SC Alumni Association Gaucho Gallup 5K/10K & Walk on Sunday, October 23. 

• Trustee William O. Jay stated that board members are eager to complete a fair contract for classified staff and thanked the many supporters who attended the meeting. 

• Trustee Marcia Milchiker expressed appreciation to those attending the meeting who felt free to express their opinions to the Board.  She just returned from trip to Japan to visit her son, an attorney, whose interest in the country and culture began in a class at SC. 

• Trustee Donald P. Wagner stated that many of the public comments to the Board regarding CSEA negotiations reflected misunderstandings.  There are differences of opinion that in time will be worked out in negotiations. 

• Student Trustee Paul Ho thanked everyone for the privilege of serving as the Student Trustee.  He expressed appreciation to his parents and their sacrifices so he could have an American education.  He wants to make sure that decisions made will help students, in this very diverse district, to succeed.

• Chancellor Raghu P. Mathur mentioned that over $10,000 has been raised so far within the District community for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  The Orange County Community Colleges Legislative Task Force met this month to kick off the 2006 legislative season. Staff from the office of a U.S. Senator visited IVC for a tour led by President Roquemore and Chancellor Mathur, followed by discussion of federal priorities with representatives of all four Orange County Community College Districts. SC Deans Kathleen Winston and Ken Patton made presentations.

• SC President Richard McCullough 's written report included mention of: 9/11 Commemoration Ceremony, successful Freshman Welcome Day, Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts, student productions filmed at ATEP, Cosmetology Program graduation and job fair, and KSBR is the most-listened-to non-commercial radio station in south Orange County.

• IVC President Glenn Roquemore 's written report included mention of: alumna Amali Tower selected to receive the Community College League of California 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award for her efforts in the 2004 tsunami; the Dallas Symphony selected former music professor Dr. Craig Thomas Naylor's brass fanfare for a performance next year; and “A Day to Remember” event for the victims of 9/11.

• ATEP Provost Robert J. Kopecky 's written report included mention of: continued marketing of property for film/commercial shoots through the website FilmTustin.com, work on a roundtable breakfast for business leaders in November, and meeting with potential educational partners to locate programs at ATEP.

• Addressing the Board were a number of classified staff and: Wendy Gabriella , IVC Academic Senate; Claire Cesareo-Silva, SC Academic Senate; Lewis Long, Faculty Association; Connie Zucker , CSEA; Susan Sweet, IVC Classified Senate; Mark Sierakowski, SC Classified Senate; Neena Nawabi , Associated Students of IVC; and Taylor Ames , SC Associated Student Government.

STATUS AND INFORMATION REPORTS

• The Board received the Accreditation Progress Reports from SC and IVC which are due to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges on October 15, 2005. 

• Results of the Fall 2005 marketing campaign: traffic in August 2005 on the IVC homepage was up 11% over August 2004, while traffic on the SC homepage was up over 100%. On-line completed applications for both Colleges in August 2005 increased more than 30% over August 2004. In the headcount of the targeted age range of 18 to 22 year old students, IVC has one less student than the fall of 2004, after a decline of two years. SC has 151 more students than the fall of 2004.

TELEVISED BOARD MEETING

• The Board meeting will be broadcast on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, at 7pm, on Saddleback College Channel 39 and Irvine Valley College Channel 33. SC TV39 has an additional broadcast on Sunday, October 2 at 7pm.
